Jake Gyllenhaal has joked that he understands why some people think he’s gay.
Speaking on Jimmy Kimmel Live, the Brokeback Mountain star revealed people had mistaken his childhood best friend for his lover.
The actor said: “Me and my best friend have known each other since we were six and I took him to a lot of award ceremonies when Brokeback Mountain was doing the awards circuit.
“So once we were in London and he was helping me knot my tie and my publicist and a reporter walked in. And they were like, ‘We are so sorry, we did not mean to interrupt you guys. And we were like, ‘What? No!’”Gyllenhaal added that his friend’s enthuastic reaction to his Bafta win also raised eyebrows.
“He shouted, ‘Yeah baby!’,” he said. “And literally, everyone was like, ‘Did he just call him baby?’”
Many porn stars in the past have attempted the leap from film to music with varying success, and Carsten Andersson has already been enjoying widespread exposure in Europe.
His debut single ‘Fun’ has been a top ten hit in Scandinavia, and is produced by Zebra 1, the London-based team behind the Sugababes.
The 25-year-old told Frontiers Web: “Without my porn past, I’d be just another boy with a song out. Porn has made people take notice.”
The Danish-German former porn star joins Traci Lords, Zeb Atlas and Jeff Stryker in adding music to his quiver.
He applied for last year’s Eurovision contest, but Andersson is currently courting some controversy by doubting Lady Gaga’s credentials.
He said of the pop star: “Most things I see from her seem copied from artists of the past.”
Carsten Andersson started his porn career using the pseudonym Ashton Sorenson, and most recently worked with Michael Lucas’s Lucas Entertainment studio.
The Chancellor, George Osborne, was accused of being “homophobic” by out gay Labour MP Chris Bryant yesterday for joking that the latter was a “pantomime dame”.
Mr Bryant, the MP for Rhondda, said afterwards: “I don’t think he would have said that phrase if I was not gay.
“I think when he gets back to the office he will probably think to himself ‘I should send a little note saying sorry, I didn’t mean to offend’.
“We all get it wrong sometimes and I think he got it wrong this time,” he added.
Mr Osborne’s aides said he had merely been making a Christmas joke after Mr Bryant accused him of being “Baron Hardup”.
The House of Representatives has for the second time passed a bill to overturn the US’s military’s ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ policy that bans military personnel from being openly gay.
The vote, which was was 250 to 175, pressurises the Senate to delay its recess for Christmas in order to vote to repeal or keep the law. In January, those senators and congressmen elected in the mid-term elections held last month, will be sworn into office, with more Republicans in office, diminishing hopes of finally ending the ban.
“It’s been a long time coming, but now is the time for us to act,” Speaker Nancy Pelosi (Democrats) said prior to the vote. “We know our first responsibility as elected officials. We take an oath of office to protect and defend, and our first responsibility is to protect the American people, to keep them safe. We should honor the service of all who want to contribute to that security.”
Yesterday, the head of the marines said that repealing the law would lead to the death of troops troops. “When your life hangs on a line, on the intuitive behaviour of the young man … who sits to your right and your left, you don’t want anything distracting you,” said Marine Commandant General James Amos.
“I don’t want to lose any Marines to distraction. I don’t want to have any Marines that I’m visiting at Bethesda [hospital] with no legs,” he added.
“When your life hangs on the line, you don’t want anything distracting. . . . Mistakes and inattention or distractions cost Marines’ lives. That’s the currency of this fight.”
But senior military officials including the Defense Secretary Robert Gates support the repeal of ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’.
In May, the House of Representatives voted 234-194, in favour of repealing the ban. This was followed by the Senate Armed Services Committee who followed the same path and voted 16-12 in favour of axing the law. In both cases, the measure was offered as an amendment to a defence spending bill
But, the hopes to repeal the law have been continually blocked in the Senate, mainly on procedural grounds. Just last week, a bill failed to get the 60 votes needed for a debate to be initiated.
A new bill, focused purely on the repeal of ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ has been introduced by Senator Susan Collins and former Vice-Presidential candidate Senator Joe Lieberman. The vote in the House of Representatives, puts enormous pressure on the Senate to debate the issue this weekend, before the recess.
Jimmy Carter, who served as president of the United States of America between 1977 and 1981, has told the BigThink project that his country is ready for a gay president. Asked whether he thought the country was ready for a gay person to serve as president he replied: “I think the entire population of America has come tremendous strides forward in dealing with the issue of gays. And I would say that the answer is yes.” He added: “I don’t know about the next election, but I think in the near future. Because step-by-step we have realised that this issue of homosexuality has the same adverse and progressive elements as when we dealt with the race issue 50 years ago… or 40 years ago.
“So I would say that the country is getting acclimated to a president who might be female, who might obviously, now be black and who might be as well, a gay person. Yes, I would say the answer is, yes.”

Prime minister David Cameron has added his voice to a campaign to support bullied gay, lesbian, bisexual and trans youngsters.
Mr Cameron recorded a video message for gay charity Stonewall in which he urged bullied teens to talk to someone about their problems.
In the message, which went online just after the Conservative Party suspended a councillor accused of homophobia, Mr Cameron said: “You don’t have to struggle on dealing with this on your own. Whether it’s your mum or your dad, or teachers, family friends or people who care about you and want to help you. Speak to them and you’ll feel so much better.
He added: “Britain is a diverse, open, tolerant place. This is not the sort of country where we label people for being different.”
Mr Cameron listed some of the progress made for gay equality and added: “Now, of course, there’s more to be done, which is why this government is working hard to drive homophobic bullying out of our schools.
“But overall, Britain is a place where you can be who you want to be and we should celebrate that.
“Talk to someone – if you do, things really will get better today.”
Today, the Conservative Party suspended a Bristol councillor who said he was “disturbed” that gay actor Sir Ian McKellen was visiting local schools to talk about homophobic bullying.
Chris Windows said he was not homophobic and that such issues should remain in the bedroom.
Madonna has spoken out against homophobic bullying, calling it “torture”.
She appeared on the Ellen DeGeneres show yesterday by video-link.
The superstar, referring to an apparent spate of suicides among gay teenagers, said: “The concept that we are torturing teenagers because they are gay – it’s unfathomable.
“It’s like lynching black people or Hitler exterminating Jews. Sorry if I’m going on a rampage right now but this is America. The land of the free and the home of the brave.”
Madonna said that she could relate to teenagers who feel isolated because of their sexuality or gender identity.
“I still feel different,” she said. “I can totally relate to the idea of feeling isolated and alienated. I was incredibly lonely as a child, as a teenager. I have to say I never felt like I fit in in school.”
She said she was taken to a gay disco by a gay ballet teacher, who “told me it was good and okay to be different…and ironically made me feel I was part of the world and it was okay to be different”.
The star also thanked the gay community for backing her.
The gay community “has been incredibly supportive of me” she said. “I wouldn’t have a career if it weren’t for the gay community.”
